Based on the acclaimed novel by Nigel Balchin, "The Small Back Room" details the professional and personal travails of troubled, alcoholic research scientist and military bomb-disposal expert Sammy Rice, who, while struggling with a complex relationship with secretary-girlfriend Susan, is hired by the government to advise on a dangerous new German weapon. Two quirky releases hit the stores this week. First off is "Brand Upon the Brain!" (2006), a film that takes place in the weird and wonderful super-cinematic world of Canadian cult filmmaker Guy Maddin, where personal memory collides with movie lore for a radical sensory overload. This eerie excursion into the gothic recesses of Maddin's mad, imaginary childhood is a silent, black-and-white comic science-fiction nightmare set in a lighthouse on grim Notch Island, where fictional protagonist Guy Maddin was raised by an ironfisted, puritanical mother. Originally mounted as a theatrical event (accompanied by live orchestra, foley artists, and assorted narrators), the film is an irreverent, delirious trip into the mind of one of current cinema's true eccentrics. Stars Gretchen Krich, Sullivan Brown, Maya Lawson, Katherine E. Scharhon, Todd Moore. Loaded with extras from The Criterion Collection. (Posted August 12)
Also from Criterion comes "Eclipse Series 11: Larisa Shepitko", a bare-bones two-box set devoted to the work of Soviet filmmaker Larisa Shepitko. The career of Shepitko, an icon of sixties and seventies Soviet cinema, was tragically cut short when she was killed in a car crash at age 39, just as she was emerging on the international scene. This set includes: "Wings" (1966), her first feature after graduating from the State Institute for Cinematography, about a once heroic female Russian bomber pilot now living a quiet, disappointingly ordinary life as a school principal; and "The Ascent," (1977) her emotionally overwhelming final film that won the Golden Bear at the 1977 Berlin Film Festival. Set during the darkest days of World War II, the film follows the path of two peasant soldiers, cut off from their troops, who trudge through the snowy backwoods of Belarus evading the Nazis and seeking refuge from villagers. A true artist, who had deftly used the Soviet film industry to make statements both personal and universal, Shepitko remains one of the greatest unsung filmmakers of all time. $29.95. "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour: The Best of Season Three,"
One of the offbeat highlights of the late-1960s was "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," a weekly variety show that debuted in February 1967 on CBS. Showcasing the talents of irreverent folk-singer/comedians the Smothers Brothers (who had a bevy of folk-tinged musical/comedy album hits in the 60s), the show quickly morphed from a "hip" version of the typical comedy-music variety show of its era to a show that extended the boundaries of what was considered permissible in television satire, eventually turning hard into politics and anti-Vietnam War sentiments before CBS pulled the plug after Season 3 in 1968.
Until now there have been no compilations of the show (In 2003 New Video put out a documentary, "Smothered -- The Censorship Struggles of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," which looked at the trials and tribulations of the show). Now, Time Life has finally stormed the bulwarks and, on September 16, will release to stores a four-disc set with 11 episodes selected by the brothers -- loaded with extras -- for $49.95. Check our September DVD calendar for more information on the release.

The Criterion Collection releases another fine pair of classic films this week: Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low" (1963) and Carl Theodor Dreyer's "Vampyr" (1932).
Toshiro Mifune is unforgettable as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper in Kurosawa's highly influential domestic drama and police procedural "High and Low." Adapting Ed McBain's detective novel "King's Ransom," Kurosawa moves effortlessly from compelling race-against-time thriller to exacting social commentary, creating a diabolical treatise on class and Japanese society. Two-disc set with a new, restored high-definition digital transfer, with newly restored original four-track surround sound. Extras include a new audio commentary by Akira Kurosawa scholar Stephen Prince; a 37-minute documentary on the making of "High and Low," created as part of the Toho Masterworks series "Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create"; a rare archival interview with Toshiro Mifune; a booklet featuring a new essay by critic Geoffrey O'Brien and a reprinted essay by Japanese film scholar Donald Richie.; more. With "Vampyr," Danish filmmaker Dreyer's brilliance at achieving mesmerizing atmosphere and austere, profoundly unsettling imagery (as in "The Passion of Joan of Arc" and "Day of Wrath") was for once applied to the horror genre. Yet the result -- concerning an occult student assailed by various supernatural haunts and local evildoers at an inn outside Paris -- is nearly unclassifiable, a host of stunning camera and editing tricks and densely layered sounds creating a mood of dreamlike terror. With its roiling fogs, ominous scythes, and foreboding echoes, "Vampyr" is one of cinema's great nightmares. Two-disc set with a new, restored high-definition digital transfer. Extras include an optional all-new English-text version of the film; commentary featuring film scholar Tony Rayns; "Carl Th. Dreyer" (1966), a documentary by Jorgen Roos chronicling Dreyer's career; a visual essay by scholar Casper Tybjerg on Dreyer's influences in creating "Vampyr"; a book featuring Dreyer and Christen Jul's original screenplay and Sheridan Le Fanu's 1871 story "Carmilla," a source for the film; more. The Criterion Collection will release this week Jacques Tati's 1971 "Trafic," the director-actor's followup to his successfull "Mr. Hulot's Holiday," "My Uncle" and "Play Time." In "Trafic," the bumbling Monsieur Hulot (Tati), outfitted as always with tan raincoat, beaten brown hat, and umbrella, takes to Paris's highways and byways. For this, his final outing, Hulot is employed as an auto company's director of design, and accompanies his new vehicle (a camper tricked out in all sorts of absurd gadgetry) to an auto show in Amsterdam. Naturally, the road is paved with modern-age mishaps. This late-career delight is a masterful demonstration of the comic genius's expert timing and sidesplitting visual gags, and a bemused last look at technology run amok. New, restored high-definition digital transfer in a two-disc set. Extras include "In the Footsteps of Monsieur Hulot" (1969), a two-hour documentary tracing the evolution of Jacques Tati's beloved alter ego; an interview from 1971 with the cast of "Trafic," from the French television program "Le journal de cinema"; "The Comedy of Jacques Tati," a 1973 episode from the French television program "Morceaux de bravoure"; and a new essay by film critic Jonathan Romney.
